Fun Stuff
This past Saturday was one of the most memorable days that I can put in my "Things I've Done in My Life" book. I made a new friend while I was camping in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. We have a lot in common, the most obvious at the time was our rv's were almost identical. The subject of flying came up and found out he is a pilot and owns a WWII Warbird, a T-6 trainer. JB as he is known lives nearby and made the offer to take me up in it if I would ever make my way to his home. Well, that was this past Saturday. I've long been fascinated by the old warbirds with their huge 9 cylinder radial engines that roar like a might fire breathing machine. As I climbed into the rear cockpit, I was thrilled to see the old bird still had it's original "steam gauges" a term that really means mechanical gauges. JB advised me to make sure that I pulled the shoulder harness and seat belt very firm to avoid hitting my head on the cockpit should we do an inverted manuever. I said with all the confidence of a veteran roller coaster rider, "no problem, I will take on any kind of thrill ride!'. The engine sputtered to life and the aircraft shook as if were going to shake itself apart. As the engine warmed, it began to run smoother with less vibration. Well the rest the video will show . . . I will add that JB let me fly the plane for about a half an hour. AWESOME doesn't begin to describe the feeling EXECPT when we went into a dive from about 4,000 feet to get enough speed up to do the inverted barrel roll flying upside down. It was when the plane pulled up and I inhaled the fumes from the engine that the SONIC burger I had eaten an hour before I arrived decided to exit. Fortunately I was able to open the canopy and hold my head outside the plane. Enjoy the video!
