Day 4 - The National Museum and Train Station
Sunday . . . woke up late again! We walked to the main shopping district and shopped as we walked toward the National Museum. It's a long walk, and there are rows and rows of shops. We stopped in one of the local underground grocery stores (Albert's) and bought a sandwich, pastries, and a drink. We found a bench where we ate our lunch and watched the crowds walk by. The city is big on tourism. Many different nationalities. Italians, Germans, Australians, Japanese, and Koreans. Quite a diverse cultural city. Reminds me of Amsterdam in a way.
The museum was a grand palace looking building. Many paintings, archeological, zoological exhibits.
We finished our museum tour and walked to the train station. It's a dreary looking building. I suspect that in it's earlier days it was as grand as any of the palaces around. Underground is where all of the activity happens. All of the ticket windows are in this area. The schedule boards are always changing . . . flipping the letters in a clackity-clack sound as the roll over to display another arrival or departure. We inquired about our departure for Tuesday morning to find out what we were to do to get our tickets validated.
Once we finished,we met a couple from Buffalo, NY. We chatted with them a while. They were as happy to speak with someone that spoke english as we were.
Our next adventure was the local transit (subway system). We purchased our tickets and were told that if we didn't have them stamped priorto getting on, or if we exceeded the 90 minutes time they were good for we woud be subject to a 500 kc per person fine ($25.00 each).
We managed to ge back to the room around 10:00 after having dinner. the 6 hour time difference makes it tough to get up before 9:00 am.
Tuesday . . . the train ride to Salzburg, Austria.
